Research Study
- Actively recruiting now -Treatment Study for Problem Dieting, Restrictive Eating and Mild Anorexia Nervosa
Our University of Auckland research team (lead by Dr Marion Roberts) is interested in finding new ways to increase early access to treatment for anorexia nervosa. The purpose of our study is to assess the feasibility of a self-help workbook treatment designed for people with mild and sub-threshold (meaning an early form of) anorexia nervosa, who may not otherwise have access to treatment services.
We know that early access to specialist treatment is predictive of full recovery, however funded services in New Zealand are typically limited to those with more severe eating disorders. This leaves limited options for those with mild or developing eating disorders, which capture an estimated 13.2% of young women by the age of 20!
CAN I TAKE PART?
You can take part in the treatment study if:
-
You are aged 18 years or older, and
-
You have notable restrictive eating and weight/shape concerns, for example strict dieting, weight loss or low weight, fear of gaining weight, or heightened concern about your body shape/size
-
Or you have have been diagnosed with an early or mild form of anorexia nervosa
-
You have not received specialist treatment for anorexia nervosa before
If you are interested in taking part or would like to discuss the study further, please email the study organiser Alexandra Neilson anei697@aucklanduni.ac.nz.

If it seems you are a good fit for the study, Alex will arrange to have brief phone call with you to check your situation with the study entry criteria. If you meet initial criteria, you will be invited to come into the clinic for a full assessment appointment with Dr Zara Godinovich (Clinical Psychologist and Research Fellow).
There is no cost to you to receive the investigational workbook treatment.
CAN I REFER PATIENTS?
Do you provide healthcare services to those with restrictive eating or what might be considered mild/subthreshold anorexia nervosa? We would be most grateful for your support in inviting potential participants to contact the study organiser Alexandra Neilson via email, or alternatively with the patient’s permission you are welcome to send their contact details directly to Alexandra for follow-up.
